Roma Plastilina:
This is a product some people refer to as plastiline, plasticine, modeling clay or
oil-based clay.
Sculpture House is the only producer of
Roma Plastilina. It is the premier sculpting medium, known the world over for its
fine smooth consistency. It holds its shape well, whether formed by hand or with
tools. Some plastilines are springy to the touch. They do not translate the
sculptor's intentions accurately. Sculpture House plastilina reflects the creativity
intended by the sculptor.
I have used Roma Plastilina for over 30
years. I find the 4 different degrees of firmness to be extremely valuable for
choosing the right plastiline for the climate and size piece.
In the summer months, I use #3 or #4
because they are firm enough to stand up to the summer heat. In the winter,
#1 and #2 work well in my wood-stove heated shop. For small projects, I place a heat
lamp over a block of #4 Roma Plastina to soften it. I find that #4 gives me the fine
detail I need for miniatures.
Roma Plastilina comes in 2 colors,
grey-green and creamy white.
 I made the gargoyle picture to the left out of
#4 White Roma Plastilina. When this kind of sculpture is done for industry it is
called a sculpt or a plastiline model. It is about 10" high and has no
armature. It is the kind of model that would be purchased by a concrete lawn
ornament company, toy company or statuary products company.
