Roma is
the world's finest modeling material that is permanently pliable and the choice of
professional sculptors the world over. Colors are Grey-Green or White.
#1 - Soft -Extremely pliable. Used for making large sculptures.
Roma No. 1 is easily scraped from molds. #2 - Medium - Generally
used for portrait heads, busts, and figure work. No. 2 is stronger than
No. 1 but works smoothly and is the favored consistency.
#3 - Medium Firm- A firmer grade of plastilina used in making
models of smaller objects.
#4 - Extra Hard - This grade of plastilina is used in making
extremely detailed objects with great detail; such as medalions.

#3 Roma Plastilina was my choice for this model. I needed the firmness of #3 for the
humpback whale's flippers. It also allowed me to add very fine detail in the barnacles on
the whale's skin. This plastiline model was purchased by a porcelain figurine
manufacturer. It is about 20" long.

When making models for
ceramic pieces, enlarge the model by 6 percent to allow for shrinkage. Porcelain clay
bodies shrink much more so enlarge the model by 10-15 percent to allow for shrinkage.

I used #4 Grey-Green to make the tiny advertising figure
models. #4 gives me the super fine detail that I need for hair and finger nails on these
miniature type models. It holds up well in warm weather. These are old fashioned store
keepers. The theme behind the advertising campaign was old fashioned service.

I used #2 White Plastilina for this nearly 4 foot
diameter soccer ball. The white plastiline adhered very well to the foam understructure.
The #2 grade plastiline works very well on large pieces such as this. I like the creamy
smooth feeling of the white grades of plastilina. I later made a fiberglass mold of the
ball and had a fiberglass model layed up in the mold. The finished piece was used as a
costume for a soccer training camp.
