Clay smoothing tools

This steely eyed character is holding 3 steels.  Though it appears that he belongs on a wanted poster, I can assure you he did not steal the steels.

Steels are thin spring steel sheet metal shapes used to smooth clay.

I have chosen an assortment of smoothing  steels (see entire set below) that are practical for the student mold maker. They are extremely flexible and will work well on severely curved surfaces as well as large straight areas.  To use; scrape the edge of the steel on the surface of your clay to take off the high spots.  Keep drawing the steel over the clay and it will soon become smooth. The steel in the center of the photo below has teeth along the edge to take down very lumpy surfaces quickly. After using it go over the surface with a smooth edge steel. This is very handy set to have for sculpting or mold making.( not shown actual size) Approximate size 2"X 4" each. To see our professional level steels and clay tools click here.
